Patricia’s of Holmdel
Concept Description:
Patricia’s of Holmdel is a traditional Italian restaurant with an approachable yet elevated design. The café and gelateria and hidden private dining room offset the main restaurant by taking a modern design approach to a classic Italian café and gelateria.
Project Description:
Patricia’s of Holmdel consists of a main restaurant space, the original restaurant and party room, and a new Café and Gelateria space with a hidden private dining room.
The concept for the design in the main space was to celebrate the history and comfort of a classic Italian restaurant but without feeling dated or stuffy. This was achieved by bringing forth traditional detailing, fun black and white photography, comfortable furniture and a warm color palate.
Plush banquettes upholstered in a deep green velvet wrap the room and make for cozy seating areas, while loose tables and chairs in the center of the room can be pushed together to accommodate larger parties. Off-white wallcovering with a vintage relief pattern provides a contrast to the walnut wood trim and decorative black wall sconces. Large-scale black and white photos add some playfulness to the room by showcasing lively scenes from an Italian-American family in the 40’s.
The Café and Gelateria is accessed either through the main dining space or from a dedicated entry off the main sidewalk. The design for café and gelateria is purposely lighter and fresher in color palate than the restaurant, with its white oak wood shelving behind the order counter, gloss blue paint and ochre and white floor tiles. The millwork detailing is modern but with some traditional touches including an antique mirror and vintage-style sconces. Integrated into the shelving unit is a hidden door that gives access to the private dining room.
Once inside the private dining area, the space opens up to 16 feet high ceilings with a large skylight in the center. To carry the feeling of the café and gelateria into the space, white oak shelving units hug a sofa style banquette and give guests a fun step-in space to dine. The same gloss blue paint continues into the private dining room along with the floor tile and wood ceiling beams. A feature bar with custom stained-glass panels and large fireplace anchor both ends of the room and a secondary dining space in a mezzanine offers an even more private dining experience.
